Mother's Day

It's coming up this Sunday and every year it becomes more apparent that I am surrounded by mothers: my mother, my mother-in-law, my co-workers who are mothers, my friends who are mothers. I've always been astounded at the effort it takes to be a mother, or a parent in general for that matter. The concept of being ultimately responsible for another person's life is mind-boggling.

We'll start with my mother. Judy is, by my account, the best mother in the world. I hope that she would also say I'm the best daughter in the world, but we'll save that for the soon to be franchised Daughter's Day. Anyways, Judy has always been the ray of sunshine everyone needs on a cloudy day. I can't remember there being one morning that I woke up as a child and didn't see her smiling face. Throughout out our childhood she was always there for me and my sister, supporting us in everything we did: sports, choir, school plays, volunteering for field trips, you name it. Through my adolescent years and into my adulthood, my mom has always been the person to give me the best advise or to be a sounding board. I love her and I'm so glad that she is my mother.

On to other mothers I know. My mother-in-law Sue is strong-willed, fiery and full of life. Although she may complain about the aches and pains associated with getting older, but she has a black belt in karate, she's a master of tai-chi and she could probably kick my ass. Kudos to her for raising an incredibly smart and creative man, just as fiery as her whom I now know as my husband.

To my co-workers who struggle every day to get out of the house in one piece, get their children to school or day-care and make it to work on time; I honestly don't know how you do it. I can't even get to work on time on a day where I have trouble picking an outfit. Maybe someday I will understand how it is possible, but for right now, I think you are all crazy magicians.

And to my friends, I'm so happy for you. To see the way you've grown into the role of a mother, so fluidly, so flawlessly, it is something to admire. I think you're doing a great job and there are some mothers to be in the crowd who I think will do just as well.

Happy Mother's Day.
