Doing anything but ...
It's not that I like being a procrastinator, it is just in my nature. For as long as I can remember, I have been putting things off to the very last second; studying for a big test, waiting until midnight to start writing a paper that was due the next day, cleaning my room, etc.
I find I work best when I am under a deadline, perhaps that is why I became a television news producer. As my professors used to say in college, "the show goes on at 5:00 pm, not 5:00:15, not 5:00:30, not 5:01 pm, if you're not ready, you have failed your viewers." And believe me, there have been some epic fails, some that were completely my fault and some that were out of my control, but nonetheless you need to be prepared.
Sadly, this is what I hate the most, preparation. I hate the tediousness of "preparing" for something. I would always roll my eyes at those who finished their projects well in advance. Where is the fun in giving yourself breathing room? For instance, I love vacation but I hate to pack. Instead of packing a few days in advance, I throw a ball of clothes in my suitcase the night before and then end up buying a ton of things on vacation because I didn't pack anything I needed.
I'm back in school right now, taking graduate classes and of course I have three reading assignments that need to be finished by tomorrow. Let's see, it's 8:30pm and I haven't even turned the first page, yup, I'd say that is par for the course.
Sometimes I think I would like to change and other times I think I really do crave the excitement and the pulse-racing of being under the gun. I'll be up until well after midnight reading because I stalled all week.
What really fascinates me is the time-wasting tactics I come up with to put off doing work. Yesterday I sorted my laundry, scrubbed my shower to a shine and rearranged the basement all because I didn't want to do schoolwork. Tonight I cleaned my oven and sat down to peruse Facebook and write this blog but now I think my procrastination must come to end. Or will it? You never know with me.
